The recordings at this website, like all work, are the result of collective effort – of countless beings, of countless becomings…. in particular one would like to mention the weekly sangat of Najm Hossain Syed and Samina Hassan Syed at their residence, where the Punjabi poetry presented on Saarann was originally composed, sung, read and discussed over more than forty years. There is a rich source of the related texts available online at apnaorg.com and wichaar.com. In Lahore, Suchet Kitab Ghar continues to be a rich resource that has sustained Punjabi literature and publications in these challenging times. For an exhaustive discussion on individual poets’ works whose poetry is presented here is the pantheon on classical Punjabi poetry; the ‘Within Reach’ series of Muzaffar Ghaffar available from Ferozesons Publishers.
The recordings were all made possible by individuals who volunteered their time, effort and resources, most importantly, classical musician and recordist Mohammad Hanif, but equally valuably, Shahid Mirza at Lahore Chitrkar, Farjad Nabi and Nadeem at the Sangat of Najm and Samina. Amongst the musicians in these recordings, the table player Riaz Ahmed from the same Sangat and classical vocalist and harmonium accompanist Shafqat Hussain are very significant for their role in enriching some of these albums.
There are too many people whose support made this possible, as is often the case, than can be mentioned in a brief intro to this work, but it is important for us to add that the paintings on the website are all the generous contribution of artist Akram Warraich from Wazirabad.
I am to be blamed for any omissions/errors in the text of the poetry I sang, and am continuously updating the material with new work or when any warrant a serious redoing, the uploaded tracks as well.
